Interdependence Day Artist Statement
Societies, even the most dysfunctional ones, are built on the cooperation of large groups of people. Our species is hard-wired to socialize and interact.
We are interested in each other as much and sometimes more than we are interested in ourselves. With that attention served to our fellow human being comes a heavy load of critique and accountability.
Throughout history we have ignored and dehumanized the voices of out-groups, much to the detriment of our survival and cooperation.
Interdependence is an act of resistance to oppressive political and social systems.
Acts of resistance include creating a universal design of inclusion and accessibility. The relational aspect of universal design is this resistance to systems that only allow a few to succeed. When we work together in ways that honor our diverse abilities, we can all succeed. Working in collaboration is counter culture.
Our Art Collective’s dreams and aspirations are to act on our interconnected nature.
We all belong to one another instead of capitalism, isolation and domination. This manifests as social justice art, whether visually explicit, figurative, or subtle.
With our art, we burn down oppressors with a vision of regrowth.
We celebrate not the sovereignty of a group of people, but how people make each other strive to be better and do better, for themselves, each other, and the planet.
